Sounds
affects us

We’re all listening ubiquitously and we’re affected by sound everywhere and all the time, even without our conscious attention. Indeed, sound is a very complex stimulus that can tune our bodies and minds to everything from peak performance to deep relaxation. Sound affects our feelings, moods, and emotions. Sound affects our productivity, creativity, and ability to think. To sum up – sound has a huge impact on all areas of our lives, including our physical and mental health and well being.

With Somnia, we have put in a huge effort to find and record specifically chosen sounds for your wellbeing. We thrive to give you the most authentic and realistic sound experience out there. We would love to share our sound and ASMR passion with you.

But which sounds are then good for you to listen to and for what purposes? Scroll down to read more.

Ambiences

Being in the nature is a natural source for relaxation and can be a valuable therapeutic practice. Through realistic 3D sound recordings with Somnia, this experience can be simulated for those without regular access to nature.

In a study published in Nature, researchers found that listening to recordings of nature leads to a more outward-focused attention, rather than inward-focused attention. This is a great discovery, since inward-focused attention is associated with states of anxiety, stress, and depression – all of which can be antithetical to sleep. They also found that sound recordings from nature moved the listeners nervous system to a more relaxed, “rest and digest” mode of activity. Listening to the ambiences of nature in Somnia will take you one step closer to great sleep and relaxation.

Finally, the ambiences in Somnia may very well happen to contain unintentional ASMR triggers, like the crackling of branches in our fire sounds and the transients rain and cave drops.

Ocean and waves

The Ocean sound in Somnia, is a soothing sound of waves crashing on the beach. This is a very natural source of “Swept White Noise”, ideal for blocking out external and disturbing noises and distractions. White noise got its name because of its analogy to light, which turns white when all visible frequencies are summed up into a single beam.

Orfeu Buxton, a Ph.D., and professor of behavioral health and director of the Sleep, Health and Society Collaboratory at Penn State University explains in his own words the properties of wave sounds, “It’s like they’re saying: ‘Don’t worry, don’t worry, don’t worry.’” So we encourage you to enjoy our sound of the ocean and it’s calming waves to gentle float into a good sleep.

Wind

The sound of the wind is perfect for relaxation and calming down at the end of the day. This type of sound creates a very calming atmosphere, one that embraces you. Wind noise is also a natural source of White Noise. With Somnia you can decide how strong the wind should be to find your sweetspot for ultimate relaxation.

Rain

The sounds of rain is, without doubt, some of the most popular natural sounds for sleeping and relaxation, and have been used to calm us all for many years. Rain sounds are also perfect for blocking out environmental and other distracting noises if you, for instance, would like to optimize your daily workflow. The possibilities of different rain sounds are endless since it’s not the rain itself that makes a noise, it’s the sound of it striking a surface. So there are as many rains sounds as there are different surfaces. With Somnia you can listen to the sound of rain, without getting wet.

Fire

Compared to the sound of rain, the sound of crackling fire offers sharper transients – the crackles – and darker, warmer levels of white noise, only audible in the lower register. When the ending of the fall is near and the winter is coming, some people switch to natural fire noise, instead of listening to pure white noise.

The sounds of a crackling fireplace creates a very safe and warm atmosphere. The sounds from a fireplace creates an atmosphere or mood resembling that you are in a very comfortable, safe and warm place.

ASMR Triggers

Our range of ASMR triggers in Somnia is ever expanding with more triggers joining the service every month. Our triggers are carefully selected, recorded, processed and mixed. The core of ASMR triggers contains intentional attempts to create the physical sleep-inducing sensation in you. Give them a go in the app and read further to explore them in detail.

Whispers

Research highlights whispering as the strongest ASMR trigger (Barratt and Davis, 2015; McErlean and Banissy, 2017). Listening to recorded whispering has since the emergence of the ASMR community in 2010, been, an easily accessible form of auditory “social audio grooming” – described as being soothed by another person through the tactile tingling sensations induced by auditory ASMR triggers.

ASMRtists

We had the great opportunity to record the beautiful voice of ASMRlis. Her whispers play on the feeling of intimacy, caring and affection and together you will create an interpersonal bond that facilitates the perfect auditory atmosphere for your relaxation and sleep. Try combining her whispers with ambiances like crackling fire or light rain, to enhance your experience.

Recently, we added whisper from ASMR Aaron who focuses on sports results and can go on for hours and hours. His voice is deep and relaxing, and whether or not you’re into sports, having results read out loud might be just what you need at the end of the day.

Brushing

In the ASMR community, brushing is typically connected to the sound of gentle touch, either from a brush or from the hands of a person, touching different surfaces like the surface of a microphone and the hair or skin of another person. Brushing has been rated as one of the most effective ASMR triggers, together with whispers for sleep and relaxation. One of the reasons for this, is that brushing sounds symbolize the grooming and caring touch from one person to another.
